Contrary to popular belief, accountants and bookkeepers perform distinctly different tasks. Bookkeepers are responsible for the ongoing maintenance of their clients’ general ledgers. Common responsibilities of a bookkeeper include:

  • Processing payroll

  • Handling the payment of bills (accounts payable)

  • Handling the receipt of customer payments (accounts receivable)

  • Categorizing the expenses in the general ledger

  • Reviewing the general ledger for accuracy

  • Reconciling bank statements against the general ledger

  • Generating financial statements

Accountants use the information generated by the bookkeeper to provide the client with services such as:

  • Income tax return preparation

  • Tax planning advice
